Psalm 128:1 ...that feareth...

that feareth - H3373

H3373 - From H3372; fearing; morally reverent.

·         H3372 - A primitive root; to fear; morally to revere; causatively to frighten.

H3373 is used 43 times in 43 verses (one for one).

Gen 22:12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

22 chapters before fearing God is mentioned?  Pretty amazing.  Then not again until:

Gen 42:18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:

Joseph speaking to his brothers – would they have grasped he was speaking about the one true God and the reverential fear He deserves?

Fear is only used 1 time in Exodus (18:21); Deuteronomy (20:8); Judges (7:3)

Three times in Job – Psalms has the most with 26!  Proverbs 3 and Ecclesiastes 2, I’d have thought it would have been used more in the wisdom books!

Though we are to speak to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, so perhaps its more appropriate to the bulk in Psalms!

Isaiah – 1
Jeremiah – 1
Malachi – 2

All of the usages couple ‘fear’ with God, Lord, him, thee, or thy name except:

Deu 20:8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.

Jdg 7:3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

Pro 13:13 Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

Pro 14:16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

Jer 42:16 Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.

Out of 43 verses – 5 weren’t coupled with God (in some way – though Proverbs 13:13 might not qualify if commandment is synonymous with God).

So saints how much are we reverentially fearing God?  Keeping His commandments, desiring to please Him in everything we do?
