Leviticus 19-21

Lev 19:28  Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

19:28 cuttings or print marks
Is that tattoos?

Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary:  "nor print any marks upon you — by tattooing, imprinting figures of flowers, leaves, stars, and other fanciful devices on various parts of their person. The impression was made sometimes by means of a hot iron, sometimes by ink or paint, as is done by the Arab females of the present day and the different castes of the Hindus. It is probable that a strong propensity to adopt such marks in honor of some idol gave occasion to the prohibition in this verse; and they were wisely forbidden, for they were signs of apostasy; and, when once made, they were insuperable obstacles to a return. (See allusions to the practice, Isa_44:5; Rev_13:17; Rev_14:1)."

There is nothing new under the sun...people have been 'tattooing' or 'branding' for quite some time.

Lev 21:5  They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

Cuttings on flesh 21:5 is this same or different to print marks? Tattoo uses a needle, isn't this a form of cutting?

There seems to be an increase in the number of tattoos - people mutilating their bodies for 'art'.

I'm sometimes amazed at how many/much folks 'wear'.  Is all that ink really good for your body?  Is this some type of masochism?

Jamison, Fausset and Brown Commentary:  "They shall not make baldness upon their heads ... nor ... cuttings in their flesh — The superstitious marks of sorrow, as well as the violent excesses in which the heathen indulged at the death of their friends, were forbidden by a general law to the Hebrew people (Lev_19:28). But the priests were to be laid under a special injunction, not only that they might exhibit examples of piety in the moderation of their grief, but also by the restraint of their passions, be the better qualified to administer the consolations of religion to others, and show, by their faith in a blessed resurrection, the reasons for sorrowing not as those who have no hope."

So how much different do we, 'priests' of the Most High God look and act from those of the world?

Leviticus 14-15

Lev_14:10  And on the eighth day he shall take two he lambs without blemish, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish, and three tenth deals of fine flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and one log of oil.

Log of oil - how do you make a log of oil? Olive oil doesn't solidify, does it?

Gill's commentary:  and one log of oil; to be used as after directed: this measure was about half a pint, and is an emblem of the grace and Spirit of God, received by the saints in measure, and is the same with the oil of gladness, poured on Christ without measure, Psa_45:7.

Heh, when I read 'log' I took it literally.  When in reality it's just a unit of measurement.

While out searching I came across this site: Jewish Virtual Library, found this interesting:

"Oil was regarded as a symbol of honor (Judg. 9:9), joy (Ps. 45:8), and favor (Deut. 33:24; Ps. 23:5). Therefore, oil was to be withheld from offerings associated with disgrace, sorrow, and disfavor, just as it was withheld from the body in time of mourning (II Sam. 12:20; Dan. 10:3; see *Mourning)."

14:42 the priest takes morter and plaisters the house. First mention of home repair man. He assessed the problem, then institutes the resolution.

Leviticus 8-10

8:6 Moses washed Aaron. Obviously not a full body wash. Cross reference to Hebrews 10:22

Lev 8:6  And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water.

Lev 10:2-4 And there went out fire from the Lord , and devoured them, and they died before the Lord . And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.

IF Fire CONSUMED THEM What Was Left To carry? Ashes?

Heb 10:22  Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Is that our physical bodies?  Spiritual bodies because Jesus is the water of life?

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary:

Hebrews 10:19-25

The apostle having closed the first part of the epistle, the doctrine is applied to practical purposes. As believers had an open way to the presence of God, it became them to use this privilege. The way and means by which Christians enjoy such privileges, is by the blood of Jesus, by the merit of that blood which he offered up as an atoning sacrifice. The agreement of infinite holiness with pardoning mercy, was not clearly understood till the human nature of Christ, the Son of God, was wounded and bruised for our sins. Our way to heaven is by a crucified Saviour; his death is to us the way of life, and to those who believe this, he will be precious. They must draw near to God; it would be contempt of Christ, still to keep at a distance. Their bodies were to be washed with pure water, alluding to the cleansings directed under the law: thus the use of water in baptism, was to remind Christians that their conduct should be pure and holy. While they derived comfort and grace from their reconciled Father to their own souls, they would adorn the doctrine of God their Saviour in all things. Believers are to consider how they can be of service to each other, especially stirring up each other to the more vigorous and abundant exercise of love, and the practice of good works. The communion of saints is a great help and privilege, and a means of stedfastness and perseverance. We should observe the coming of times of trial, and be thereby quickened to greater diligence. There is a trying day coming on all men, the day of our death.

Exodus 33-35

33:4-6 no ornaments, then they stripped?

Exo 33:4  And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.

Exo 33:5  For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

Exo 33:6  And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.

Combination verses or they 'thought' they hadn't any ornaments on?
How like them are we? We think we're being holy and in reality are falling way short of the mark.

33:8 Moses went in, God stood without? No escaping the presence of the Lord.

Exo 33:8  And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.

34:28 - 40 days and nights with out food or water.

Exo 34:28  And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

Moses had to do this twice, Jesus once.  Moses struck the rock twice too...when he was only to speak.

Exodus 30-32

30:9 no strange incense or burnt sacrifice

Exo 30:9  Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering; neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon.

30:34 Perfume

Exo 30:34  And the LORD said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight.

32:6 rose up to play

Exo 32:6  And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

Play - H6711 - A primitive root; to laugh outright (in merriment or scorn); by implication to sport.

The word play is used 17 times in 17 verses.

H2181 - Play the whore - Deu 22:21; Play the harlot - Hos 3:3, 4:15

H5059 - Play with his hand - 1 Sam 16:16, 17; play skillfully - Psa 33:3; play well on an instrument - Eze 33:32

H7696 - Play the madman - 1 Sam 21:15

H7832 - Play before us -2 Sam 2:14; Beasts of the field play - Job 40:20; play as with a bird - Job 41:5; play therein - Psa 104:26

Exodus 28-29

28:16 foursquare, used how where?

This is a denomination...validly lined up with the Word?

Uh no...if the little bit of research I did is indicative.  Falls into the charismatic camp.  Name it claim it, blab it grab it.  God wants you healthy and wealthy.

NOTE - I do NOT vet sites...I'm just searching for info and sharing.

Beware of the Foursquare Church

Got Questions

4Square - My...quite a list of items worth noting.  Deceptive and deceitful.

God help us...to be inundated with Your Word, to wash ourselves daily in Your Word.  Help us to be bold witnesses to and for You.

Making the priesthood. Unlike RCC these marry.  Such a distortion in the RCC, and so much abuse.  God didn't intend His servants to abstain to serve, one can be married and serve...the Roman Catholic Church is an abomination.

28:32 habergeon? - hmmm...what is this and what does it mean?

Exo 28:32  And there shall be an hole in the top of it, in the midst thereof: it shall have a binding of woven work round about the hole of it, as it were the hole of an habergeon, that it be not rent.

habergeon - H8473 - From H2734 in the original sense of H2352 or H2353; a linen corslet (as white or hollow).

  • H2734 - A primitive root (compare H2787); to glow or grow warm; figuratively (usually) to blaze up, of anger, zeal, jealousy.
  • H2352 - From an unused root probably meaning to bore; the crevice of a serpent; the cell of a prison.
  • H2353 - From H2357; white linen.
Translated from the same Hebrew word only twice, once in the verse above and then again in Exodus 39:23.  A different Hebrew word is translated habergeon in Job 41:26.

H8302 - From H8281 in the original sense of turning; a corslet (as if twisted): - breastplate, coat of mail, habergeon, harness. See H5030.
  • H8281 - A primitive root; to free.
I thrice checked the from H2734 - I'm at a loss to understand how glow, grow warm, blaze up, anger, zeal fits in with the hole of a garmet being stitched to insure it doesn't ravel.

Or how when one is harnessed it somehow translates into freedom?  Freedom within boundaries perhaps?  Which is what we're given as sons and daughters of the King.  The world, in it's lost state sees Christianity as confining, boring, dull, etc.  Yet, once you've tasted of the heavenly delights, had Him open your eyes and understanding to the great sacrifice made to secure your salvation, nothing He asks of you should be seen (or felt) burdensome.

I've heard you're not supposed to give unsolicited advice, especially to in-laws. I find it interesting that Moses (80+) is being given counsel from his father-in-law. ..and doesn't chafe, but accepts and follows.

Genesis 48-50

48:8 I have a different perspective on this verse since spending time with older people.

Gen 48:8  And Israel beheld Joseph's sons, and said, Who are these?

Jacob had just said:

Gen 48:5  And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

So was Jacob slipping?  Or did he just want Joseph to clarify?  Because a few verses later, Jacob is quite deliberate about whose getting the blessing.

Gen 48:19  And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

Gen 48:20  And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

I sometimes wonder if older folks aren't really 'slipping' but with all the new stuff coming at them daily they aren't able to process it all as quickly?

Think back, it used to be that folks pretty much were born, raised, lived, grew old and died in the same community.  There wasn't a lot of change.  New folks may have come into the community, obviously marriages, births, deaths, etc.  Folks may even have move onward (wagons westward, eh?).  But communities and families used to be more static.  I think that's the word I want.

There wasn't the lighting speed of action we have now days were things change daily - progress.  New and improved.  Peoples thoughts and memories, were built upon and built upon.  Additions/changes were usually slower and gradually made.

Perhaps our older generation isn't really 'not keeping up,' but rather, we're losing something with all our 'new' and 'improved.' So the next time we're tempted to become frustrated or annoyed with someone whose memory may not be ticking at 4 GB per nano second...stop and think how much are we really retaining and remembering of what really counts?  The Word of God.
