Psa 25:16-18 Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses. Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins.
The psalmist verbalizes his feelings as:
desolate - H3173 - From H3161; properly united, that is, sole; by implication beloved; also lonely; (feminine) the life (as not to be replace).
- H3161 - A primitive root; to be (or become) one.
My Bible has a note next to desolate, lonely. This word is used 12 times in 12 verses. The first one is when God tells Abraham to take his son, his only son to Mount Moria. Another usage is Jephthah's rash vow which resulted in the death of his only child. A few other examples:
Psa 22:20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
Psa 68:6 God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.
afflicted - H6041 - From H6031; depressed, in mind or circumstances (practically the same as H6035 subjectively and H6041 objectively).
- H6031 - A primitive root (possibly rather identical with H6030 through the idea of looking down or browbeating); to depress literally or figuratively, transitively or intransitively (in various applications). (sing is by mistake for H6030.).
Used 75 times in 75 verses, its translated most of the time as poor.
- H6862 - From H6887; narrow; (as a noun) a tight place (usually figuratively, that is, trouble); also a pebble (as in H6864); (transitively) an opponent (as crowding).
- H6887 - A primitive root; to cramp, literally or figuratively, transitively or intransitively.
Used 73 times in 73 verses - this word is used twice in Genesis 42:21 when Joseph's brother are discussing their ill treatment of him - his anguish and distress.
distresses - H4691 - Feminine of H4690; narrowness, that is, (figuratively) trouble.
- H4690 - From H6693; something narrow, that is, a column or hill top.
- H6693 - A primitive root; to compress, that is, (figuratively) oppress, distress.
Used 7 times in 7 verses. Once in Job (15:24), 5 times in Psalms and once in Zephaniah.
pain - H5999 - From H5998; toil, that is, wearing effort; hence worry, whether of body or mind.
- H5998 - A primitive root; to toil, that is, work severely and with irksomeness.
Used 55 times in 54 verses, used the first time of Joseph naming his firstborn.
I'll close with these verses from Psalms, based upon the word distresses (H4691):
Psa 107:6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
Psa 107:13 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
Psa 107:19 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
Psa 107:28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
I'm seeking comfort from the cries of those past saints and God's delivering, saving and bringing them out of their distresses. It's hard to be in a difficult place or situation, or having to deal with unpleasant people, or rocky relationships. Where ever we are, as saints, we can cry out to God and He will move. It may not always be in a way that we want, but He is always with His children, bringing them through (and purging us along the way) of dross.
O' Lord, You know the hearts and minds of Your people, are individual hurts and cares, our loneliness and pains, help us Lord to stand firm and keep our eyes focused upon you.
